Chinese: The Gathering

Building the ultimate Magic collection in chinese

In Magic : The Gathering, collectors usually chase Limited Edition Alpha cards or ultra-rare print runs like Summer Magic. But a different kind of rarity is emerging: Chinese editions, combining cultural significance with some of the lowest production numbers in MTG history.

We are proud to unveil a monumental project: The perfect collection of Chinese: The Gathering. Our goal is simple yet audacious: to curate the largest, most complete collection of Chinese-language cards in existence, establishing it as one of the rarest TCG assemblages on the planet.

The ultimate goal

We try to gather :

  • 8000 Simplified Chinese cards from 1997 to 2010
  • 18000 Traditional Chinese cards from 1995 to 2022

2010–2024 Simplified Chinese cards are excluded from this project due to high print volumes and low collectible interest.

Rarer than Limited Edition Alpha

While Limited Edition Alpha is the gold standard for many, the math of printing tells a different story for Chinese editions. Produced in significantly smaller quantities than their English counterparts, many Chinese sets possess a survival rate that rivals, and sometimes eclipses, the game’s earliest printings.

Furthermore, these editions are celebrated for their unique alternative illustrations, featuring artwork never seen in Western releases, making them not just game pieces, but exclusive cultural artifacts.

Although Summer Magic is known for its limited print run, multiple Chinese releases such as the Simplified Chinese Fifth Edition match or exceed that level of scarcity.

A complete history (1995–2022)

This collection is a detailed historical record. It follows the growth of the game in China and Taiwan from the first Traditional Chinese printing in 1995 to the last one in 2022. We focused mostly on Traditional Chinese language cards. (understand this choice in this article).

The archive is organized into four different time periods. These periods follow the history of Mandarin language printing

  1. The Golden Era (1995–2003): A collection of every Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese set.
  2. The Silver Era (2004–2010): When Traditional Chinese was not being printed, we focused on Simplified Chinese. This kept the Chinese language collection going.
  3. The Bronze Era (2010-2019): Returning to Traditional Chinese
  4. The Modern Revival & Finale (2019–2022): the final decade of Traditional Chinese production.

This project aims to find every single card

This project aims to find every single card. We are not just looking for popular cards. We are recording the entire history of printing :

  • Every base set card.
  • All Art Cards and Tokens.
  • Every exclusive promotional card and unique “Frame” variant.

To keep the “Master Set” pure and possible to complete, we do not include pre-release date stamps or foil cards. While collecting specific sets in foil is possible, completing a full set of every card in foil is statistically impossible. By focusing on the “Classic Frame” and unique versions, we create a cohesive, museum-quality display.

A historical archive

Magic: The Gathering was the first Trading Card Game (TCG) printed in Chinese. It came out before Pokémon and helped start tabletop gaming in the region. This collection is more than a hobby; it is a historical archive of a cultural event. Although the English market is more famous, the high rarity and historical importance of the Chinese printings offer great prestige.

We are not just building a binder; we are preserving a legacy. One day, these cards will be in a TCG museum. They will show the rarest chapter in the history of the world’s greatest card game.
