Global Series

Global Series: Jiang Yanggu & Mu Yanling

Global Series: Jiang Yanggu & Mu Yanling is a special product from Magic: The Gathering. It was released in 2018 and was designed mainly for the Chinese market. It was only printed in english and simplified chinese.

Unlike a normal expansion set, this product contains two ready-to-play 60-card decks instead of booster packs. Each deck is built around a different planeswalker:

  • Jiang Yanggu
  • Mu Yanling

These characters were created to reflect Chinese themes and mythology within the Magic universe.

Global Series: Jiang Yanggu & Mu Yanling is the only product on Scryfall released exclusively for the English and Chinese markets :

A unique chinese box

One of the most interesting aspects of this product is the Chinese edition packaging.

The Chinese box is unique because:

  • It represents one of the first major Magic products created with a clear regional focus.
  • It was designed specifically for the Chinese market.
  • The artwork layout differs from the international version.
  • The product presentation emphasizes the two planeswalkers more strongly.

This makes the Chinese version historically important. It is not simply a translated product — it reflects Wizards of the Coast’s strategy to connect directly with Chinese players.

For comparison, here is the international version of the Global Series: Jiang Yanggu & Mu Yanling box.

For collectors, the Chinese box stands out as a distinct regional release, not just another language variant.

What’s inside?

The product includes:

  • 2 complete 60-card decks
  • 2 premium foil planeswalker cards
  • Beginner-friendly rule guides
  • Several cards exclusive to this release

Many of the cards were not printed in regular expansion sets at the time, making the product unique in design and identity.

The Exclusive Token

Another interesting detail of Global Series: Jiang Yanggu & Mu Yanling is the exclusive double-faced token card included in the product. This token was designed specifically for this release and was not part of a regular expansion set. It reflects the theme and mechanics of the two decks, especially Jiang Yanggu’s connection with creatures and Mu Yanling’s control over water.

For collectors, this token is important because it represents a product-specific print, meaning it cannot be found in booster packs from standard sets. As a result, it adds a small but meaningful layer of uniqueness to the Global Series box. Over time, such exclusive inserts often become notable pieces for collectors focusing on regional or limited Magic products.
